Rider Highlight: JP Brocket wins his season cyclocross opener!

Name:

 JP Brocket

Event & Category:

Prologue CX – Masters 40+

Brief event/course description:

Season opening cyclocross race here in Kansas City. Course was at Blue Valley park which offered some nice elevation changes, a few power sections, and plenty of twisty turns to keep you on your game.

How’d the race go down for you?

Took the hole-shot then stayed on the front and kept it near full gas for the first 3 laps. Really opened it up in the power sections and climbs while staying smooth through the turns. Stayed steady with a good effort the rest of the race after opening a nice gap on 2nd place about 15 minutes in. Rode smooth and strong to the finish to take my first win of the season on opening weekend.

Which coach do you work with and how did your training help you prepare for the event?

Threshold intervals, threshold intervals and more threshold intervals all spring and summer, every week, long and short rides. Last few weeks leading into the start of the season he started putting some V02 and high intensity efforts in the mix to start building that pop needed for cyclocross racing. I can really feel that threshold power during the race on the climbs and open sections. As the intensity comes in from HIIT work and racing on top of my improved threshold power this should be a really fun and fast race season. The workouts have hurt, I have cursed my coach during and after the workouts, but the results are worth it!

What advice do you have for someone up and coming in your cycling discipline?

It’s great to have the latest equipment but nothing beats the feeling of being able to push yourself hard and get that engine running stronger. Spend your hard earned money on a legitimate coach and save money on the gear, you will be stronger and have more fun going faster (unless you can afford both of course!).

What is your next event?

Jingle Cross UCI CX weekend then Trek CXC UCI CX weekend.
