2017 Larry H Miller Tour of Utah Stage 2. Cory Lockwood rides hard for the Team GC

Deep in the midst of Stage 2 at the Tour of Utah, Cory Lockwood was left with a decision that could help to further define success on the Elevate- KHS Pro Cycling Team. Already having a great day by having 3 riders in the front group as the reduced peloton began the final two uphill pushes Cory began to lose contact with the group.  Instead of pulling the plug and soft pedaling in to save it for the next day, knowing that he had helped set up his teammate James Piccoli for a podium finish, Cory put his head down and made a big effort.

That late effort, highlighted, and seen by his heart rate plateau, was indeed his biggest extended effort of the day. 30 minutes at 175 chest pounding beats per minute is no easy task.  It’s made even more brutal considering the previous day and that this was at the end of a difficult stage where he was in the front group until the closing arguments.  Cory rode hard for many reasons: pride, the opportunity to truly give it a go with the best in the world, and for the Team GC. The fruits of Cory’s labor could be leveraged for the remainder of the Tour of Utah.  Eleavate- KHS Pro Cycling now sits at 5th team and only 4 minutes off of first, well in striking distance.  Keep in mind that the team competition is the summation of the top 3 finishers on each team every day.
Cory’s effort, while while seemingly mundane at the time gives the team a different card to play as the Tour of Utah rolls on.  This Team GC card may indeed never come to be played, but it’s there should Paul and Heath need to use it.
