Christian Helmig (retired)

Christian Helmig Cyclist

Christian Helmig was born on May 17th, 1981 in Luxembourg, Europe. He initially started racing mountain bikes in 1995 at age 14 and raced primarily off the road (mountain bike cross country), winning multiple state titles in Germany before focusing on the road in 2008. After graduating with a MBA in Sports and Entertainment Management from the University of Dallas in 2007 he joined the Metro Volkswagen Cycling Team for my first full season on the road. In 2009 Helmig also took over management of the team besides racing full time. In 2011 the Metro Volkswagen Cycling Team merged into the ELBOWZ Racing team, where he again got the chance to focus on riding and racing full time.

The same year he also was eligible to adopt a second nationality and from there on he competed for Luxembourg. That was also the time when Helmig rediscovered my love for the off-road disciplines and he started racing cyclocross during the winter of 2011.That first cross season was already pretty successful and Helmig earned a spot on the national team and the opportunity to participate at the cyclocross world championships in Koksjide in 2012. Last winter Helmig decided to focus fully on the cross season and that decision paid off with the national title as well as the selection to race the world championships in Louisville.

In 2013 Helmig made the move back to Europe for personal reasons, after racing primarily in the US for the last 6 years. Since the beginning of 2013 he raced for Team Differdange – Gigi – Losch, a continental squad out of Luxembourg. His focus shifted even more towards the off road disciplines, racing some mountain bike xc and marathon events during the summer besides cross. In 2014 he managed the hat trick, winning the Luxembroug National Championships in the Cyclocross as well as the XCO and XCM (Cross Country Olympique and Cross Country Marathon) Mountain Bike disciplines. Christian Helmig retired from racing at the end of 2016.
